Last Friday evening, Ms. Meggy Cheng, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Dance Company, shared the unique journey of her transition from marketing to arts management at a 2GHK sharing session.

Having loved performing since childhood, Meggy nevertheless embarked on a commercial career after graduation. After years in marketing, she continually asked herself: could she merge her profession with her passion? This question ultimately led her to roles at several flagship cultural institutions in Hong Kong, and now, as the first female Executive Director of the Hong Kong Dance Company, she leads the team in achieving a winning balance between art and business.

Applying a market-oriented mindset, she helped clarify the company's positioning. The Hong Kong Dance Company has curated a series of dance dramas inspired by Hong Kong culture, such as The Way of the Warrior: Bruce Lee — Discipline & Infinity and the Hong Kong comic classic The Storm Riders series. The process of adapting The Storm Riders was particularly moving. For its premiere in 2014, the comic artist Mr. Ma Wing-Shing granted the Hong Kong Dance Company the pioneering opportunity to adapt the comic into a dance drama—a highly uncommon cross-disciplinary collaboration at the time. This pioneering partnership, which has now spanned over a decade and will see its third revival in 2025, stands as a testament to a profound mutual trust and a shared commitment to artistic creation.

Meggy's presentation was structured and strategic, resembling a business briefing, yet it was consistently infused with a palpable passion for the arts. She perfectly demonstrated that business and art are not opposites. When one engages in what they love with clear thinking and professional strategy, the two can indeed achieve mutual success. Her journey resonates deeply with the shared challenges and reflections of many 2GHK members, whether in steering family legacies or forging new ventures: how to balance passion with pragmatism, and vision with viability.

Thank you, Meggy, for such an inspiring sharing. May we all carry this belief forward on our own paths, walking with greater steadiness and purpose.
